Is there
anyone amongst us whose first real memories of Evil and Horror weren’t of
peaking out from behind the couch at Christmas while “The Wizard of Oz” was
showing on the TV?
Would the Wicked Witch get Dorothy and Toto?
Could they reach the Emerald City?
Who was the mysterious Wizard?
And most of all!
Where did she find the blue flying monkeys?
When L.
Frank Baum originally penned the Wonderful Wizard of Oz the Wicked Witch of the
West was “a paunched old woman with three pigtails and an eye-patch. Baum
himself specified that she only had one eye, but that it "was as powerful
as a telescope", enabling the witch to see what was happening in her
kingdom from her castle windows”
It wasn’t
until the 1939 movie where Margaret Hamilton played the Witch as a stooped,
green-skinned witch dressed in a long black dress with a black pointed hat.
This representation of the Wicked Witch has become a standard for what witches
look like and one of the most powerful archetypes for human wickedness.
The Wicked
witch still ranks No. 4 in the American Film Institute's list of the 50 Best
Movie Villains of All Time, keeping her the highest ranking female villain!
The Wicked Witch of Woz is inspired by the amazing performance, makeup and looks of Margaret Hamilton, I hope it's a fitting tribute to the actress and the role.
and I still
want a blue flying monkey!
