The place had a long history of pain, sorrow, depression and madness. Though it was supposed to be a place of healing, most were sent there at best to convalesce and die forgotten, and at worst, to be subjected to an existence of experimentation, indignation and at times outright torture all in the name of "the science of the mind". Defending one's self from sources of pain and harm is a natural response to such extreme situations, and when those instincts kick in, virtually anything can become a weapon. Sometimes the cages they were kept in weren't enough, and for those whose last recourse was the most primal, that of biting, special cages mounted to a tight collar around their neck were employed to injury to the staff. Looking through the old photo album on the doctor's bookcase, Nathan wondered if he was the only one who had grasped the irony: patients supposedly suffering in the cage of insanity actually having thier heads confined in a private little box.
